Madagascar Hotels Ranking

There are several Madagascar Hotels that provide excellent accommodation while you are going about finding that elusive lemur, giant chameleon or perfect beach.

But how do you effectively choose a hotel in Madagascar that you can be sure will measure up to your expectations?

I use trip reviews and reports because you get an honest opinion from fellow travellers who have already stayed in the Madagascar hotels you might be interested in on their trip.

The following ranking is based on trip reports primarily from Tripadvisor but also from articles in forums, websites, travel journals and magazines.

1. L'Hotel Anjajavy

Some trip reviewers have gone as far as to say that this is the best Madagascar hotel they have ever stayed in.

It's a 4-star luxury hotel that faces the Mozambique Canal and is located 120 km north of Majunga (the 'Flower City') surrounded by 450 hectares of natural park where you will find lemur and other wildlife.

The service is reputed to be of an extremely high standard in an informal, relaxed atmosphere.

Accommodation is in individually thatched cottage rooms overlooking the beach and sea containing a living room with a drawing room corner, a breakfast corner and a bedroom. Stairs lead to the first floor where you will find a room that can be used as an office, a children's bedroom or a guest room.

The bathroom is equipped with a king-size bathtub and is separate from the toilets. A noiseless and individual climate control system maintains a constant ideal temperature in each room.

The hotel also boasts an overflow 200 square meter swimming pool facing the sea and a restaurant and bar serving international cuisine with Malagasy flourishes.

2. Hilton Madagascar

This hotel is situated in Antananarivo, the capital city of Madagascar overlooking Lake Anosy and will provide you with an excellent base for exploring the rest of the island.

You can take your pick between four restaurants and bars on site and if you want to update your online travel journal and e-mail the people back home about your trip the business centre has internet access.

If you prefer to spend some time at the hotel there are a multitude of leisure activities to choose from like swimming, tennis, fitness club with jacuzzi, sauna, Turkish bath, casino gambling and a discotheque. Boredom is not an option at this hotel.

3. Vanila Hotel

This establishment has received good reviews and is situated on the western coast of Nosy Be island which is where you will find black lemur, sportive lemur, panther chameleon and Malagasy tree boa.

A three-star hotel where each bedroom is air-conditioned and opens onto a terrace with a magnificent view of the sea and a tropical garden.

The restaurant and bar also enjoy a panoramic view of the sea and the meals on offer include local products like fish, lobster, crab, zebu meat and exotic fruits.

The obligatory swimming pool is also available to fend off the worst of the heat.

4. Vakona Forest Lodge

This lodge is the perfect base from which to explore the nearby Andasibe/Perinet National Park which is a mere 7km away and contains lemurs, chameleons, frogs and birds.

Madagascar accommodation is in bungalows with en-suite bathrooms and dining is done in the central restaurant and bar area with a mixture of good cuisine on offer.

Activities include a swimming pool, horse riding, canoeing, squash and ping pong facilities but you will probably be spending most of your time in the nearby park gawping at the amazing wildlife. Madagascar hotels are rarely better situated than this one.
